JJJ's Newsletter #12 - Go back to News

Greetings Triple J's members! Welcome to another installment of our newsletter. As always, we've got much to fill you in on....

First and foremost, congratulations goes out to Jon and Jason at Nakai Theatre for pulling off a very fun and very successful HOMEGROWN production! For those of you who had the opportunity to attend a play or production during the two weeks HOMEGROWN was on, thank you for supporting your local artists! Thanks also goes out to all the volunteers who helped make HOMEGROWN happen!

Props out to Scotch and Shenanigans for putting on one of the most truly entertaining evenings I have enjoyed in many months! Shenanigans hosted local favourites, Scotch, this past Friday, and the line-up lasted all night long! Thanks also out to B'Tosh for buying the entire scotch bar....whew!!

The biggest thing to hit Whitehorse this summer is SUNSTROKE at Shipyards Music Festival. Triple J's Music has partnered with Frostbite Music Festival to co-present this festival of local and visiting acts on June 23 in Shipyards Park. This event is being organized in conjunction with l? Association Franco-yukonnaise, who are presenting St. Jean-Baptise festivities on June 24, and the Yukon Film Commission, who are presenting Valle Son (a visiting Cuban band) for their Yukon International Film Festival closing party on June 25. Frostbite and Triple J? s would like to invite you to join us for this fresh and innovative new festival on the Yukon River? s waterfront.

Sunstroke will be a daylong concert which runs from 12 noon to 12 midnight. In addition to boasting a variety of 17 musical acts in the park, we will be hosting a beer garden and a raffle to fundraise for Frostbite? s Permanent Home project. There will be a food concession by Tony's Pizza and the Yukon Filipino Assocation, not to mention vendors and artisans setting up tables as part of the Longest Days Street Fair. Admission is only $5.00, and kids 12 and under will be admitted for free. Our hopes are that by keeping admission costs low, we will attract anywhere from 300 to 600 people (as a minimum throughout the day). We have selected a wide variety of musical genres to attract a diverse audience and have selected mostly local talents in order to showcase our incredibly vibrant Yukon music scene. We will be presenting the following performers as part of Sunstroke: NOMEANSNO (kickass punk band from Victoria), Summer of '92 (from Toronto), Rae Spoon and Ivan Coyote (from Vancouver), and localites: Crash the Car, Death in Venice, Scotch, Fullers Earth, Kate Weekes, Raw Element, Gordie Tentrees, + Standard Deviation, Drifting, DJ Nemo, Friend Called Five, Nemesis, Heather Loewen and the Daily Special. No one has dared to bring you this kind of variety - everything from folk to funk to blues to rock to metal to punk to hip hop to techno, and more!

To anyone interested in volunteering, we have many ways to help out! To anyone interested in sponsoring: This is an inaugural event which we hope to hold annually! Your business will be among the founding supporters who will help cultivate the first-ever, annual SUMMER music festival in Whitehorse. Please contact Jordi at Triple J's or David Prodan at Frostbite for more information! The first draft of the flyer, which does not represent all of our sponsors yet, is enclosed as an attachment for your review.
