Greetings fellow Triple J Members! It's been so long since we last communicated, this will be a full-flavoured newsletter! Let's jump in face first!
Upcoming events - where to begin?
REAL MCKENZIES: On Friday, November 16 or Saturday, November 17, come out to Coaster's Bar and Grill to kick up your kilt to the rockin' sounds of the Whiskey Dicks opening for the Real McKenzies. The Real McKenzies are a Scottish-influenced celtic punk band from Vancouver. They perform original music, as well as resurrect traditional Scottish songs, giving them a new punk-influenced sound. Bagpipes are included in most of their performances! Brought to you by the Tundra Punks, tickets are exclusively sold at Triple J's. $15 will get you in each night if you buy in advance - and please note we are only accepting cash payment for these tickets. $20 at the door! Oh, and if you wear a kilt, you'll get five bucks off tickets at the door! We have three different Real McKenzies cds in stock, as well as three styles of t-shirts. Don't miss out on getting a super-cool tee - they seriously rock! For more information on the Real McKenzies, check out: www.realmckenzies.com
DAYGLO ABORTIONS: On Friday, November 30 or Saturday, December 1, don't miss Dayglo Abortions at the Capital Hotel. These ol' school punk rockers are from Victoria, whose style combines elements of punk, metal and alt rock. Their lyrics are informed by a complete disregard for societal norms! They formed in 1979, and are still kickin' ass on stage today! Brought to you by Tundra Punks, presale tickets are exclusively available at Triple J's for $20. Local heavy-hitters Nemesis will be opening act! For more info, check out: www.myspace.com/thedaygloabortions
MOONSTROKE: Moonstroke is the polar-opposite event to Sunstroke Music Festival, and is a Yukon Humane Society fundraiser. Triple J's Music, Yukon Brewing Company and the Yukon Humane Society have teamed up to present this winter solstice event. It will run from 8:00 pm to 2:00 am in the Grey Mountain Room at Mount MacIntyre Recreation Centre on Friday, December 21, 2007. Tentatively, we have booked the following acts to rock the night away: Johnny Pogue and the Colleens, Sophisticated Cave Men (with Ivan Zenovich), Drifting, CHS, David Clunies-Ross, Gordie Tentrees and DJ David Prodan. This is a licensed event, as well, we have an awesome silent auction to raise money for the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter. 100% of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to the shelter! Ticket costs are being kept wikked-low, at an amazing $10. Must be 19 or older to attend. Please note that we are still looking for sponsors to donate to our silent auction! We need the pillars of our community to come together to help abused and abandoned animals - help those who cannot help themselves.
MISFITS: Yes, you read right, the MISFITS are coming to Whitehorse for an all-ages show on New Year's Eve at the Convention Centre! There are only 550 tickets available for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Misfits in our lil' town! Tickets go on sale, again exclusively at Triple J's, on Saturday, November 10th at 8:00 am. Folks will likely be lining up very early, so be prepared to wait in line - DRESS WARM! Tickets will be available by phone, but not until noon. Tickets are limited to four per person. Tickets are $100.00 each if you pay by cash. If you choose to pay by debit or credit card, there will be a $4.00 service charge, which means that each ticket will cost $104.00. Another exciting opportunity for you to meet the Misfits will be at our in-store signing, which will likely also occur on New Year's Eve day at Triple J's! More information on the in-store signing to follow. You can thank Tundra Punks for making this show a reality!
JOSH MARTINEZ: Wahooie! We've just confirmed Josh Martinez will be playing at Coasters on NEW YEARS EVE! Don't miss this awesome opportunity to witness the slick slide of saliva from the one, the only, MARTINEZ! Tickets, of course, will be sold at Triple J's Music. They are not yet on sale, so we'll keep you posted. Why not make it a double-header - MISFITS and MARTINEZ in one amazing jam-packed musical memory!

Jessica Hall and Sam Singh have asked me to relay the following: "Hear ye, hear ye: I Pods, High Definition cameras, Macbooks, Little Mosque on the Prairie DVDs and VIA Rail train tickets across the country are all yours for the taking! Well the last two anyways: that's what YOU can win if you watch OUR short film and vote for it at the Radio Canada International DIGITAL DIVERSITY contest (http://www.rcinet.ca/rci/en/concours.asp) The contest is about showcasing interesting people from Canada's various walks of life and our vast tapestry of cultures. We've made a film about a local hero of ours (and who many of you already know): Viraj Wanigasekera, the Prairies only professional male bellydancer. The film is called "Raqs Balladi North of 60" and it is about his short jaunt up north to Whitehorse last February. It's also a precursor to our full length documentary "One Thousand and One Performances". Its reached its second screening from November 5 to 11,2007. Check it out. And check out some of the other films--there's more than 50 up there. Vote for the best one. Vote for ours. If you can't vote more than once (You can't.) vote for the latter. YOU might win and Inshallah, so might WE. Most importantly, YOU will be making a statement. Nay, an affirmation both solemn and striking. If you will, a powerful declaration: that male bellydancers and small Northern towns are indeed very, VERY cool.
One last note - the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter is always looking for new volunteers to assist with dogwalking, cat-petting, and kennel cleaning. Please remember that the shelter is currently over-burdened with animals (up to 3 dogs per kennel) and needs your help! For more information on how to get involved, please go to: www.humanesocietyyukon.ca
Take care and bundle up! Until next time...thanks for reading!
